A Breakthrough at the Chesapeake Semi-Final

The day of the Chesapeake Semi-final brought the nicest weather of the week. Practice rounds were played in extreme heat with thunderstorm delays or in constant drizzle (and sometime actual rain). Saturday was beautiful with a high temperature in the 80’s and eventually lovely sunshine. With a great day to play, the challenge for the ladies at the semi-final was definitely the golf course. Cart path only requirements as a result of heavy rain over the past week, slowed things a little, but all the golfers worked hard to keep up the pace of play and things moved along smartly.

Extremely hot weather in the Washington DC area in July and August had taken its toll on the golf course and the conditions were not optimal, players even putted around the burrowing holes of cicada wasps on a couple of greens. A number of players had great success on a very difficult course. The 2 top players in both the championship and first flights scored between 82 and 86 and 3 players in the field had net scores below par. The first and second flights had ties for low gross and the scramble team winner was determined by a match of cards, with Greater Philadelphia beating out Central Pennsylvania by half a stroke.

Kimberly Korbel, the Chief Volunteer Coordinator, turned 4th Flight player on Saturday, had recruited a great group of volunteers. She turned the reins over to Stacey Breslin on Saturday who, with the help of Jennifer Flather, Krish Mayatt, Susan Lamar, Clair Hollady, Cathy Johnson, Sheila Chittms, Donna Wood, Lillie Thomas, Anela Winstead, Sharon Dillon, Kimberly Litherland, Patricia Bost, Maureen Gilmore, Cardel Saunders, Melvin Campbell, Claire Hollady, Debbie Smith, Pat Brockway, Dan Warren, Meredith Ingram, and Sheryl Wilkerson, ensured a successful event.

Special thanks also to our Rules Officials, Kathleen Matthews of the Baltimore chapter and Jim Carr of the VSGA.

Playing through Mother Nature’s Fury

Little did we know that most of the golf courses in the Des Moines IA area were going to be closed due to severe flooding. Fortunately, in the little town of Panora, IA a hidden gem of a golf course stood up to the abnormal weather conditions and set a great stage for the Central Plains Semi-Final Championship.

The Lake Panorama National Golf Resort (Home of the 2010 Iowa Open) faired better than most, as some of the courses in the area were under water, along with many roads in and around the area. It certainly made some interesting challenges for the competitors to just arrive at the golf course. Parts of the course did suffer from the rainfall, but the greens remained in great shape and for the most part, the course was in good condition.

The event started out hot and muggy. Temperatures were heading up the thermometer into 3 digit range. Coupled with the humidity, it made for a challenging situation just to stay in an upright position out on the course, not to mention the bad hair days. It wasn’t looking well for the Saturday Championship round.

However, as Saturday dawned, we were surrounded by fog, which was a new addition to the weather issues. Fortunately, it did not present a problem for long as it burned off rather quickly. We then had overcast skies, cool temperatures and no rain for Tournament Day. They say timing is everything and it sure was true this time.

The Des Moines Chapter provided goodie bags for all competitors as well as extra water and cool towels out on the course. Many thanks to them for making everyone feel welcome in your neck of the woods.

Wynn Walters rounded up plenty of volunteers to help the tournament run smoothly and make for a successful event. On a sad note, one of the competitors – Robin Toney-Webb, had to withdraw from the tournament due to a tragic loss in the family. Our condolences, thoughts and prayers go out to her and her family.

Although not everyone was able to advance to the Finals in Lake Geneva, everyone there was a winner by advancing from their own Chapter Championships. We look forward to seeing a great showing in October at the Finals.

Northern Californial Semi shines in Sparks, NV

It was the perfect pairing of weather and golf for the Northern California Semi Final held on July 31^st at the beautiful Resort at Red Hawk in Sparks, NV. The Lakes Course was in great shape and provided a challenge for all levels of play. Rachel Moreaux of the Sonoma-Marin-Napa Chapter emerged as Low Gross of the field with a 77 and many excellent scores were posted in all flights. The 18^th hole was the stage for an exciting sudden death playoff for Low Gross in the Second Flight between Bianca Daykin of the Northern Nevada Chapter and Jodie Asher of the Fresno-San Joaquin Chapter. With many fellow competitors cheering them on from the patio adjacent to the 18^th green, it came down to the final putts. Jodie sank her bogey putt to win the hole and the Low Gross title.

A special thanks to Lori Argall, Chief Volunteer Coordinator, and all of the fantastic volunteers from the Northern Nevada Chapter. They were a big part of the success of this event!

Eastern Midwest Challenges & Triumphs

A challenging course, Stonewolf Golf Course designed by Jack Nicklaus in Fairview Heights, IL was the site of the Eastern Midwest Semi-Finals. Despite the efforts of the Superintendent and his staff some of the putting greens were not in the best conditions due to the oppressive summer weather conditions. Nevertheless, the EWGA participants played on…

We had two Sudden Playoffs in First Flight and Third Flight. Congratulations to all the competitors who earned the opportunity to advance to the Championship Finals in Lake Geneva, WI.

And of course, a tournament wouldn’t be a success without some volunteers. We had volunteers from the Alabama, Tennessee and St. Louis Chapters. THANK YOU to Ann Relling, Chief Volunteer Coordinator (St Louis, MO Chapter) for her efforts in recruiting and organizing such great volunteer crew: Michael Rodney, Debbie Brandt, Mickey Goldstein, Janet Popelka, Diana Light, Jan Countryman, Reece Waymire, Vern Waymire, Faye Siegel, Valerie Fowler, Leigh Major, Courtney Monroe, Theresa Glover, Ron Glover, Marcela Cox, Becky Balzraine.

Beatin the Heat in Greenville, SC

At beautiful Verdae Greens Golf Club in Greenville, SC, eighty-eight women gathered to compete in the Carolinas Semi-Final Championship. The goal for this event was just to make it through all 18 holes of golf and be able to talk about it at the end. The heat index was reaching 105, but all players stuck with it, stayed hydrated and posted some great scores.

Leading the way with a phenomenal score of 76 was Catherine Shealy. A former assistant golf professional who regained her amateur status, Catherine proved to be a contender for that overall Champion spot in Lake Geneva, WI on Oct. 1st & 2nd at the EWGA Championship Finals.

And just when you thought you had enough golf in the heat, Sara Harrison and Mindy Blitzer of the second flight as well as Linda Hensenne and Amy Rawson from the fouth flight played on in sudden death playoffs to determine who would earn that 1st place spot.

A big thank you goes out to our Chief Volunteer Coordinator for the Carolinas Semi-Final, Rhonda Rogers. Rhonda organized a great crew of people from the Greenville and Charlotte Chapters – Betty Reynolds, Stacie Wallace, Kyle Rogers, Laura & Steve Haight, Laura & Randy Boes, Pam Howard, Pam Alexander, Fannie Jemison, LaWanda Jemison, Rivia Brown, Rachelle Fuller, Kitty Allen, Robyn & Rich Maggio, Christina Scalcione, Marilyn Parris, Olivia Williams, Beverly Scarborough & Kitty Allen. Texas Semi-Final Offers Hot Temps and Hot Golf

It was definitely a Texas BBQ at Bridlewood Golf Club in Flower Mound, Texas. The word of the day was “HOT!” Hot temps and hot golf!

The scramble teams were styling. The Dallas Team even had toe nails that matched their outfits, but it was the Austin Team that conquered the course and came out on top this year.

We had a play-off for the first flight low gross trophy. Terry Kroenung and Janet Case preferred to call it a “stay alive” play-off rather than “sudden death.” At the end of the first play-off hole, it was Janet who stayed alive and won the gold medal.

No chapter was more excited as they waited for the results than the Metro Oklahoma City Chapter. This year, the chapter held its first Chapter Championship and received its first Semi-Final trophy. Amber Jones won 2^nd low gross in her flight and her chapter members were practically ready to carry her on their shoulders. We saw her at dinner later that night and she was still wearing her medal around her neck!

It was a great day with great women! Thanks go to all the Texas District competitors and a FANTASTIC group of volunteers that made the tournament a success. Sonja Jackson of the Dallas Chapter gathered volunteers from her chapter as well as Houston, Fort Worth and Metro Oklahoma City.

Where in the world is Howey-in-the-Hills Florida?

That’s what I was saying until I finally made the trek to this quaint little town in Central Florida, home of the beautiful Mission Inn Golf Resort and Spa that hosted the EWGA’s North Florida and Southeast Semi-Final Championship on July 17, 2010. Once you’re there… you’re there and you have two well-manicured golf courses to chose from.

The EWGA Championship players competed on the Las Colinas course which translated into english means “the hills”. Yes, there were many hills on Las Colinas which made you feel like you were not on a typical, flat Florida golf course. The surroundings were picturesque and the atmosphere of the event was fun and vibrant.

Sudden death playoffs ensued in the Championship and First flights which made for a very exciting finale.

A big thank you must be sent to our Chief Volunteer Coordinator, Shelly Drakes, who organized a great team of volunteers: Cathy Monforte, Barb Michalek, Carla Bitterling, Molly Brethour, Donna Craig, Linda DeBartolo, Nancy Fitzpatrick, Barbara Groves, Kay Herring, Faye Horton, Peggy Keith, Cathy Laschober, Ginny Moris-Ardin, Joan Nero, Sue Rideout, Laurie Swinehart. Henderson NV…Where the Golf is Hotter than the Slots

Living in Tucson, I didn’t think it could get any warmer in July…….then I went to the Southern California and SW Desert Semi-Finals in Henderson NV, just outside of Las Vegas. The Revere Golf Club did a good job of taking care of us and the course was in great condition.

We had volunteers from chapters all over the Semi-Final area and they did a phenomenal job. With the heat over 100 most of the day, volunteers were busy covering the course with extra drinking water. There were 3 Rules Officials from the local area, including our Las Vegas Chapter President, Sherry Corselo.

With 80 players out on the course, they had a tough task covering it all in the heat. Only one of the competitors succumbed to the heat, but not until she finished the final hole. A good air conditioning system in the club house, ice and water brought her back to normal in short time.

After a warm day of golf, and the awards being presented, the members started going their way. Some driving home and some trying their luck in a different venue down on the Strip in Las Vegas. Who knows, if they didn’t win in the Semi Final, perhaps they won enough money in “the gambling halls” to travel to Lake Geneva and cheer on their fellow competitors who advanced to the Finals.
