EWGA Championship Finals – Round 1 September 25, 2009

Port St. Lucie Florida is the place to be this week.  Good friends, good fun and good golf is what will be had at the PGA Golf Club for the 14th Anniversary of the EWGA Championship Finals.  With 205 players representing over 100 different EWGA Chapters in 37 different states, it is a tournament to mark in the record books.

Preparing to defend her title from 2008 is Lori Whitaker from the Atlanta GA Chapter who will be paired with some stiff competition in Sarah Dekraay (Madison WI Chapter), Pat Ayers (Port St. Lucie/Treasure Coast FL Chapter) and Kip Malick (Dallas TX Chapter).  The total handicap index of these four ladies is 7.6, so we may see some very low scores this year.

On the scramble team side, the Port St. Lucie/Treasure Coast FL Chapter is in their back yard, so the pressure is on.  It’s definitely any team’s tournament to win this year.  With one team representing each Semi-final District, the competition will be very good.

Also, the stroke play winners from the 2008 Finals have exercised their exemption to play in the 2009 Finals, so along with Lori Whitaker, watch out for Robin Banner (Knoxville TN Chapter), Julie Shore (Raleigh Triangle NC Chapter), Christine DeRienzo (Long Island NY Chapter), Stacey Weitzel (Baltimore Regional MD Chapter), Bridget Albosta (Northeast Bay CA Chapter), Jackie LeBlanc (Greater Toronto CANADA Chapter), Diane Madigan (Fort Worth/Metroplex TX Chapter), Lisa Lowe (Kansas City Metro Chapter), & Michelle Boyer (Miami FL Chapter).

The weather is only calling for a small percentage of rain and lots of sunshine, so we’ll see what PGA Golf Club presents to the players on Friday and Saturday.

EWGA – Central Plains Semi-Final Championship September 16, 2009

The Central Plains Semi Finals at Shoal Creek in Liberty Kansas is now one for the record books.  Since we had 98° temps and 90% humidity, there were lots of “Hotties” out on the Course.  Since the Kansas City Metro Chapter provided extra water, hydration drinks, and snacks out on the course, no one perished from the heat, everyone was grateful for their contribution.  The course was in great shape and the staff did a wonderful job in making this a successful event.  Look for these “Hotties” as the winners now look forward to Port St. Lucie and hopefully some cooler weather.

EWGA Carolinas Semi-Final Championship September 16, 2009

After playing in downpours last year, the ladies in the Carolinas Semi-final were not deterred by near-record temperatures in the 90’s.  The Kingsmill Resort Woods Course designed by Tom Clark and Curtis Strange presented quite a challenge.  Low gross for the tournament was Judy Hillhouse of the Championship Flight with an 84.

Both the second and third flights had ties for low gross, Darla Huff and Cass Johnson in the third flight and Geri Miller and Galen Grant in the second flight.  All 4 ladies advanced to the championship round.  Geri Miller had quite an exciting day.  On her 8th hole (#17), she scored a hole in one.  Already at the awards luncheon celebrating when she got the call to return to the golf course, Gerri made the 10 minute return ride very quickly and then prevailed over Galen in a 2 hole play-off.

While the Carolinas ladies ate lunch and bided their time until the playoff was completed and the awards could be presented, they were entertained by the music of Steve Ambrose (husband of EWGA member Ginny Ambrose) & friends.  Everyone had a great time and enjoyed the ambiance of the Kingsmill Resort.

The volunteers, led by Betty Reynolds (the site administrator) from Charlotte, were invaluable in making the event a real success.  Thanks to: Fae Mungo, Lydia Simmons, Mariah Johnson, Annette Toner, Kitty Allen, Alice Queen, Kim Russell, Mary Tijerina, Charlotte Briggs, Rivia Brown, Joyce Sharples, and Lydia Simmons.

EWGA Northern California Semi-Final Championship September 2, 2009

Beautiful skies and very warm temperatures were the norm for the Northern California District Semi-Final.  Located just north of Sacramento at the Lincoln Hills Golf Course, this was a perfect location for our event.  Friday brought many competitors to the course for practice rounds prior to Saturday morning’s early start.

Our Championship flight started us off and set a great pace.  The ladies were excited to get out onto the course and compete!  While Rachel Moreaux was our only Championship flight competitor, AND was playing on a bad hip, she came in first with a nice score of 81.  The Sonoma-Marin-Napa, CA Chapter’s Scramble team placed first, but it was a very close decision.  All three of the top Scramble teams shot the same gross score of 70.  It was the team factor that decided who would advance.

This was one of the closest Semi-Final results that I have been a part of in a very long time.  We had 5 scorecard playoffs to determine our winners.  It is great when competitors are that close with their game as it makes the competition that much more fun!

Many thanks to Lauri Martin of the Sacramento Chapter as our Semi-Final Site Administrator.  Her organization of the volunteers, help in securing Rules Officials and wonderful positive approach to the entire weekend made the event go very smoothly.  And a special thank you to the following volunteers who helped out:  Liisa Niemi, Cari Vinci, Nita Chorneau, Felicia Mitchell, Sharon Blume, Kathy Copelin, Lora Lee Rosario, Deana Frandsen, Linda Reid, Sherry Bell, Clare Payne, Kris Corbridge, Pam Katros, Theresa Stamey, Ursula Whitfield.

Congratulations to all who participated!

Brrrr….. from the Upper Midwest Semi-Final September 2, 2009

Nestled amongst the grand bluffs of the Mississippi River in Lake City, MN, The Jewel Golf Club was the site of the Upper Midwest District Semi-Final. Designed by three times U.S. Open Winner, Hale Irwin, The Jewel Golf Club winds throughout 800 acres of the river valley just a stones throw away from Lake Pepin. An eagle was watching the players from high above a tree on hole # 3. Turkeys were roaming between holes 14 and 15 and deer galloped across several fairways into the woods.

With breezy conditions and November like temperatures the competitors put on their cool weather gear and teed off on holes # 1 and #10 without a hitch.

Congratulations to these competitors who earned the opportunity to advance to the Championship Finals at The PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, FL.  With a 2 under par, Sarah Dekraay from the Madison, WI Chapter won low gross in the Championship Flight.  First Flight: Beth Krein, Minnesota Metro Chapter (1st LG), Debbie Hallla, Milwaukee, WI Chapter (1st LN).  Second Flight: Julie O’Connor, Milwaukee, WI Chapter (1st LG), Kymberle Eide, Minnesota Metro Chapter (1st LN).  Third Flight:  Jeanne Whitish, Madison, WI Chapter, JaDawn Muhammad, Milwaukee, WI Chapter.  Fourth Flight:  Sandy Tadesyeske, Milwaukee, WI Chapter, Carol Gouty, Chicago Metro, IL Chapter.  The Scramble Team winner was the Fox Cities/Green Bay, WI Chapter under Captain Pam Fritz.  Team members are: Tami Vosters, Beth Weishaar and Lori Mirwald.

A great big THANKS to all the volunteers who helped at this event.  Angie Christo, our Site Administrator, Tammy Smith-Foyt, Sue Fischer, Dianne Nesburg, Kris Schmitt, Kerry Trapp, Nina Stillman all from the Minnesota Metro Chapter and Mary Jo Burke from the Naples, FL Chapter.

North Florida & Southeast Semi-Final August 4, 2009

The EWGA was very excited to return to Amelia Island Plantation a few weeks ago for the North Florida & Southeast Semi-Final. Amelia River Golf Club hosted the event, and the course was in great shape. After pouring rain Wednesday and Thursday, there were small rivers through the greens and fairways on the golf course. However, on Saturday morning, the sun was shining, the temperature (and humidity) was rising, and the rain stayed away.

With the weather cooperating, the Championship flight teed off on Hole #1 and the First flight teed off on Hole #10 at 8am. The Championship flight had a close match going during their round. Our winner for the gross division was Monica O’Reilly from Jacksonville, FL with a great score of 78. Teeing off last in the morning, and finishing with a scorecard playoff, was the Scramble division. The teams from Birmingham, AL and Jacksonville, FL both shot a net score of 64, and after a scorecard playoff, Jacksonville, FL was named the winner of the North Florida & Southeast Semi-Final. Congratulations to all the winners on advancing to Port St Lucie, FL for the EWGA Championship Finals.

One of the highlighting stories of the weekend was Virginia “Beesting” Burton from the Greater Baton Rouge, LA Chapter. After getting stung by a bee during her practice round on Friday afternoon, Virginia came out on top by winning Low Net in the Third flight, and advancing to the Finals in Port St Lucie, FL.

Also, I would like to thank Judy Curtis from the Jacksonville, FL Chapter for volunteering as the Semi-Final Site Administrator. Thanks to Judy, we had a tremendous group of volunteers who helped register competitors, greet players in the morning, and help spot golf balls to help the competitors stay ahead of pace. These fabulous volunteers are: Carol Raymond, Cathy Garvey, Kathy Weedon, Linda DeBartolo, Ginger Simpson, Sandy Pardue, Terry McFarland, Brenda Bailey, Sharon Reich, and Joan Nero. Thank you ladies for helping us run a great Semi-Final.

EWGA Southern California/Desert Southwest Semi-Final July 29, 2009

A little morning fog greeted the 81 competitors at the Southern California/Desert Southwest Semi-Final, held at the beautiful Steele Canyon Golf Course outside of San Diego on Saturday, June 27th.

By the first tee time, the fog had lifted, revealing clear blue skies and the challenging Gary Player layout.  With plenty of elevation change providing spectacular views, this was truly a Championship course.  While birdies were not within easy grasp, there was some brisk competition resulting in many score card playoffs and a sudden death playoff for Low Gross in the Third flight between Jill Ireland of the Santa Barbara Chapter and Dorcas Hooker of the Los Angeles Chapter.

After gathering up the two competitors (Dorcas had to abandon the nice cool libation she had just ordered), a small gathering of well-wishers followed them to  Hole #1 on the Canyon Course to begin the playoff.  After battling their way down the fairway, Jill Ireland emerged the winner with Dorcus taking 2nd Low Gross.

Congratulations to Denise Drake who was Low Gross of the field with a 79.  Now it’s on to Port St. Lucie!

Also, a very special thank you to all the Southern California volunteers… Sharon Council (Site Adiministrator), Wendy Eagle, Kathy Eagle, Sonja Stevenson, Julie Gorog, Dorothea Sledge, Dora Trujillo, Kris Poe, Susan Williams, Beth Gaff, Catherine Schiaffo, Debbie Dakouzlian, Rowena Reno, & Kerry Rauch.

2009 South & Central FL Semi-FinalWe didn’t think the rain would stay away, but, you know, the EWGA has a way with Mother Nature and amazingly enough, she gave us a great day for one of our largest Semi-Finals so far this year.

Ninety-three women ascended on a beautiful little golf club in North Fort Myers FL called Magnolia Landing.  The greens were plush, the fairways were emaculate and the competition was intense. 2009 South & Central Florida Semi-final Championship

In the Championship flight, a familiar face in Pat Beljan-Ayers was in the hunt to earn her advancement for another opportunity to be crowned the EWGA Championship medalist.  Of course her journey was not easy with players like Pat Rogers, Kerry Timm, and Linda Lopez right along side her, striving for the same title.

Many familiar faces like Ingrid Hunter, Linda Lemon-Steiner & Rashida Loya earned their tickets to Port St. Lucie and hope to take advantage of the Championship Finals being in familiar, South Florida territory.  Also looking to make an impression at the Championship Finals is the Scramble team from Port St. Lucie.  High expectations will be set for this team, but they’ll make the best of it with their positive spirit.

Congratulations to all players in the South & Central Florida Semi-Final and especially to those who are advancing to the Championship Finals.

A very special thank you is in order for the lovely, EWGA volunteers who gave their time to assist with scoring and photography… Beverly Kennedy (Palm Beach County FL), Nancy Stone (Naples, FL), Kim Bendickson (Manatee, FL) & Mario Macaluso (Palm Beach County FL).  Without the great volunteer efforts from EWGA members, the EWGA Championship would not be where it is today.
